Djerba Culture & Nature
Djerba, a cultural and natural treasure
Located a few kilometers in the large of south eastern coast of Tunisia at about 500km from the capital Tunis and 120 km away from the Libyan border, Djerba the largest island in North African coast line is ideally situated and presents an exceptional landscape and climate.
Legend says that Djerba was the island of the Lotus-Eaters that Odysseus had discovered during his voyage through the Mediterranean than followed from other civilizations such as the Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Berbers, Jewish and lastly Arabs landed on the Island.
Different other communities from South Europe (Spanish, Turkish, French...) had disputed the control of the Island over centuries. All theses civilizations left behind a unique remarkable historical heritage.
As a major seaside resort of the Mediterranean, Djerba has launched its tourism industry in the late 60’s thanks to its 150 km long golden beaches and romantic sunsets. Since the 80’s, Djerba became the touristic destination number one in Tunisia. The island possesses an international airport which meets all aviation standards. The industrial port and Offshore zone of Zarzis situated about 30Km from the island represent a natural extension to the logistic capabilities of Djerba.
